Wedding Gown Rental Facts in Q&A
Wedding gown rental locations? I'm getting married in 2008, but am just trying to plan ahead. Me and him don't want to spend too much money on the wedding, so I've decided that I'd be fine with just renting my gown. But where can I go to do that? I live in the Northern Orange County area in California...

lovktr replied: "I don't recommend renting your gown. I bought mine on Ebay brand new with shipping for 45$ .. I have since re-scheduled my wedding so if you need a size 4 just let me know=)"

steffo replied: "You do have some time, so another alternative would be to purchase dress from a consignment shop. Or you can look on Craigslist.com, there are always solicites for used wedding dresses."

ma replied: "Start looking in Thrift Stores, woman give them away if they are angry because of divorce or whatever, and you can get drop dead gorgeous gowns for 50.00"

K M replied: "check out I haven't been yet, but it looks like a great place! good luck!"

Where can I find a wedding gown rental in either Long Island, New York City, or Connecticut? Wedding will be on Long Island, I live in CT....any suggestions?

Xiomara M replied: "A wedding gown rental is hard to find and usually not worth it. Try David's Bridal's $99 sale in the spring or even the formals section at a department store. You'll be surprised what you can find at very reasonable prices."

giggles replied: "This first one is in Brooklyn. The second link is a search engine for wedding gown rentals."

Kayla J replied: "New york Ally's Bridal & Tuxedo (201) 217-9711 - 254 1st St, Hoboken, NJ Zeller Tuxedos (212) 571-0417 - 204 Broadway, New York, NY Planet Green Incorporated (212) 989-5447 - 175 W 4th St, New York, NY You can try ebay or try these websites as well Congrats "

iviemg replied: "look online"

Rental of wedding gown? I'm a Malaysian who's living in Malaysia right now. I'll be getting married in Sydney, Australia next year. My question is :- 1) Roughly how much is the rental of a wedding gown in Sydney? If it's the same price as getting a new one in Malaysia, I might as well own one! 2) Do you know which bridal studio rents beautiful gowns? Thanks in advanced. Angela

Missy Missy! replied: "I have never heard of Bridal Stores renting gowns, and to be truthful, I don't think I would want to rent one. Try getting online and checking if you can rent, I tried and couldn't find any! Try... "

istie5 replied: "https://secure.ferrariformalwear.com.au/locations.cfm?CFID=2163205&CFTOKEN=54710719 Check out this link. They hire out dresses and they will be able to help with other contacts. Good luck."

Gerdie replied: "The site where I bought my wedding dress, they also rent them. And trust me, the gowns and dresses are gorgeous! Good Luck!!"

Any opinions/advice on wedding gown rentals? I've heard that renting a wedding gown can be much more affordable, and that you can get a beautiful gown. Anybody have any personal experience, either good or bad? Thanks!

scrabblemaven replied: "No personal experience, but I think it makes great sense! I went the cheap route and got a bridesmaid dress in white for myself, less than 150 with alterations."

cinderella9202003 replied: "If you want to go really inexpensive, there are plenty of nice thrift stores that sell gowns for much cheaper than if you rented one."

A dad& a teacher replied: "That's the normal way of do it in Taiwan. It's great because you can get a gown that would give you an instant heart attack if you looked at the price to buy it. And if he is THE ONE, you will never have to use it again. Go for it! You can go crazy checking out the most beautiful gowns and know that you can afford it because you'll just rent it, not buy it."

freedom replied: "why rent if you can own one visit: "

nanny replied: "Haven't done it, but a great idea."

momblessedx5 replied: "There are places on the net you can probably get them even cheaper then renting like ebay, Davids bridal always has their $99 sale and Bargainweddingdresses.com also has $99 gowns and if you ever have a daughter or granddaughter they have the option of wearing it also."

bride 2 be 6_23_07 replied: "When I was planning my wedding I looked all over town at many different bridal stores, can you believe that not 1 rented any wedding dresses or bridesmaid dresses...I ended up looking at thrift stores and consignment stores and they all seemed to be 100 years old and smell like moth balls...I found my dress on clearance at a bridal store for $199 - I then added beads around the neck line - it's BEAUTIFUL and CHEAP!!!! Good luck!"

What do you think of a bridal gown rental shop? With planning a wedding and looking at dresses, I was wondering if a Bridal rental shop would be a good idea. I always hear people say that guys are lucky becuz they can rent a tux, but girls have to BUY their dresses. How much would you be willing to rent a gown for? Around here, just getting a wedding gown cleaned would cost around $150.00 Alterations might cost another $150. If that's the case, a gown rental would have to cover that and THEN some, wouldn't it? So that would defeat the purpose. Bridesmiad dresses might be a bit better. I think they cost the same as any other dress for cleaning. Maybe $10- $20 Girls, would you rent a gown? If so, how much would you pay to rent vs. buy? I am not looking for one for myslef. I did get my gown for my wedding... it was just something that I was curious about. I just wondered how many women would actually rent it. The groom rents his tux, usually. Guys are soooo unsentimental! LOL

bookworm5767 replied: "Great idea - I would rent one because I'm not sentimental when it comes to clothes. However, I wouldn't pay more than $100 because I'm cheap."

krissyxgoesxgrr replied: "This all depends on you as a person. Some girls want to keep their dress while others don't really care. You're only going to wear it once... For an hour... Maybe two. If you aren't all sentimental about it, go ahead and rent it. I'm not sure if I would... The thought of a ton of people wearing my dress would be sort of weird... If you're looking to not spend a lot of money, why don't you try a second hand store. There will only be like one person that's worn it before you."

mannasox replied: "I wish we had a bridal rental place for gowns around here. That would have saved me a lot of time looking for a dress. I've heard that they run from 400-1000 bucks to rent a dress, and in my opinion that is absolutely absurd I paid $70 for my $1,000 alfred angelo dress on ebay. and I paid $62 for BOTH bridesmaid dresses on there too. So if you dont want to spend much, check out EBAY"

lil southern girl replied: "It's a great idea. We had one here on the MS Gulf Coast for decades, it was actually called Rent-A-Gown. I'm not really sure why it closed, they did a fantastic business. I don't know what prices would be these days. I was a junior bridesmaid in the 80's and we rented really nice gowns from there for $40.00 back then."

PinkLove22 replied: "I would not rent a gown. Just think about it. Why would you want to wear something 50 other brides have worn previously. Even though it's clean, I would still be wondering who was sweating in the dress before me (those dresses get hot). It's your special day. Why not buy a dress and have it as a keepsake. Preserve it. Let your daughter and granddaughters take swatches from the dress to sew into their own when they get married."

Butterfly replied: "If you live in or near a large city I think it would be a good business. We are lucky enough to have one shop in the large city nearby to rent dresses. She also rents shoes, the crinolin, veils and jewelry. The dresses start at $99 and I think for the entire outfit and jewelry she charges about $150.00. I was going to sell my dress from my first wedding and use the money to rent one from her, but we decided to get married in Morocco. Congrats on your wedding."

Mz Honey replied: "i would probably buy my own wedding gown as i'm very picky when it comes to those kinds of things. however, if its not an issue for you then definitely consider renting it. it would save you quite a bit of money. same goes for the bridesmaids. in most cases you would get a group discount. the rentals vary, usually they are tailor made and might not include alterations. but if it does need it, the shop has to do themselves. each place is different. i would check the local shops in your area and compare. good luck"

vanillaoakies replied: "Yikes. It's your wedding day, and in my opinion, you want something to keep after all the cake has been eaten and the flowers have wilted. David's Bridal has lots of gowns for around 100-200 dollars. I would go there and find one, instead of paying the same amount to rent one. Renting a bridal gown.....I wouldn't recommend it. Its your one day...and it should be all yours, and not some girls who wore the dress before you."

1st.timemommytobe07 replied: "im already married, but no, i would never rent a gown. i think of it as its my special day, and my special dress. i dont want to have to give it back at the end of the day. plus my dress had really pretty lace detail on the bottom and around the train, that if i have daughters, i plan to cut some of it off and sew it around a hankercheif for her to carry down the aisle when she gets married one day. just a sentimental thing i thought about. i would let her know that that was from my dress i wore when i married her daddy. with a rented dress, you cant do that."

Wedding Planner replied: "Most bride's will only wear their wedding gown once. So, I have never understood paying the average $700 for a wedding dress. I say if you can find one that you like in a rental store go for it. But in terms of money you would be better off doing one of two things: 1. Go shopping in the bridesmaid section for your wedding dress. Bridesmaid dresses are often made in white and cost a lot less. 2. Go shopping in the formal dress section of Dillards, Sears, JC Penney's, and other department stores. They often have a lot of white dresses there and no one will know that it is not a wedding dress. The only reason I think you would want to rent one is if you need a large ballgown type wedding dress. You usually find really elegant and classy gowns that are perfect for most weddings in the areas I mentioned above. I bought my wedding dress for $40 with tax and it looked beautiful and was perfect for a beach wedding. I got it at Dillards. You can see the pic at"

Mandy S replied: "I think I rented a gown for about a total of $350. It was a relatively simple bridal gown, but you know what, there was NO reason to spend three month's salary on one dress I would wear ONE day of my life. And I'm glad I didn't let the "but your daughter will wear it one day" thing get the better of me. Most girls would NOT wear their mothers' gown's these days, and anyway, I have two very boyish boys. If I had bought the dress (or a dress similar to the one I rented), paid for cleaning and pressing, and paid for alterations, I could easily have spent somewhere around $800 or more. I'm glad I made the decision I did. Something else to consider for women who want to save some money but have a beautiful dress: Be willing to look in "different" places. Most women drive straight to David's Bridal or other even more expensive "bridal" shops, but they don't consider consignment shops or they don't look in the stores in malls that have nice prom/pageant/formal gowns. Some of them carry bridal gowns that may not be by major designers, but are beautiful just the same. And many light-colored formal gown, in whites and ivories and pinks, can double as a really pretty, somewhat simple but elegant, bridal gown. And it can be purchased for around $200."

Breezer replied: "It´s funny-I was thinking about renting a dress, and something struck me about this not being a good idea- I watched a lot of weddings on the website where we got married, and you know how I could tell the gown was rented? The bride had to lift her gown up and carry it down the aisle. In fact, one bride cussed because her dress was too long. I am 5´2", and I bet most of the dresses that you rent are made for people 5´5" or taller, so this idea flew out the window. I ended up buying my dress, and hauling it all the way to Vegas, but I tell you what, it was worth every penny! The alterations alone cost $150 because the dress was too long, but I looked great. Women under 5´5"-do not rent a gown!"

kystarlyte_kystarlight replied: "No lectures please! I bought a previously rented gown for my current wedding-to-be and my last wedding. My last wedding dress was white, but because it was my second wedding, the seamstress added colored beads and I wore a small pink headpiece made to match the dress. I paid $200.00 for the headpiece, dress and slip. A great bargain. I could've rented the whole outfit for less, but I wanted to keep it. My current wedding dress was a rental, it cost $2000.00 new, but because it was a rental I got it for $400.00. They would've put the lost beads back on and altered it for me in the rental cost. They usually have a large selection of bridesmaids dresses as well. You can also check out consignment shops and even thrift stores and find some beautiful dresses that are no longer wanted for a steal! Happy hunting!"

bern replied: "My co-worker rented her dress and her bridesmaids dresses. Everything was beautiful. I'm not sure of the cost, but she said it was reasonable."

imagine0218 replied: "I think its is good idea. But that's just my opinion. I can't see spending thousands or even hundreds of dollars on a dress I'm only going to wear once, so yea, I'd definarly utilize a shop like that. I didn't do it for prom, I'm certinally not going to do it for my wedding. Both my prom dresses cost less than $150, and they were nice. The only draw back I see with this idea is that certain styles may be popular than other, and thus the dress becomes hard to obtain. Or there wouldn't be that wide of a selection. If that ended up being the case, i'd probably end up buying. Then again, you're talking to the person who is planning on buying a white prom dress, a lot cheaper, during the summer, when they're all on sale, when she gets married."
